Food Pantry

The Food Pantry is a distribution that is held periodically.

Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP)

Food is distributed monthly at various locations across Baraga, Houghton and Keweenaw Counties.

  • CSFP is a monthly food package program that helps improve the health of income eligible persons at least 60 years of age by supplementing their diets with nutritious USDA foods

  • The CSFP package includes fruits and juice, vegetables, cheese, milk, meat, poultry and fish, plant-based proteins, cereals and pasta and rice

  • Nutrition education is also provided to participants on a monthly basis to help educate participants on the value of a nutritious diet to improve health

  • Income eligibility is currently $1,995 per month for an individual, $2,705 for 2 people, $3,415 for 3 people. *Add $710.00 for each additional member.

The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP) and CAA Food Pantry

The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP) is a federal program that helps supplement the diets of income-eligible individuals and households by providing them with USDA foods at no cost. TEFAP Foods are distributed at the B-H-K CAA Food Pantry monthly, as long as USDA & pantry foods are available.

  • TEFAP foods are distributed through Community Action Agencies, food banks, pantries, and mobile distributions, to name a few. Participant eligibility for TEFAP in Michigan is 300% of the poverty level.

  • Eligibility for TEFAP is based on the need for emergency food and the household meets the (below) income guidelines or participates in SNAP, WIC, FDPIR, CSFP or SSI

Furnace and/or Chimney Cleaning (including minor repairs)

This program provides furnace and/or chimney cleaning (including minor repairs). If you burn wood or oil and need this service or if you use natural gas or LP gas and it’s been a few years since your furnace has been cleaned, you may be eligible for this program. If you do burn wood, it is very important for health and safety reasons to have your chimney cleaned on a regular basis.

Youth Recreation & Education

This program provides recreational and/or educational opportunities for income eligible area youth between the ages of 8 and 18. The youth may choose the activity he/she wishes to be involved in and the program will pay up to $200 per child (limit two children per family). Activities may include lessons, classes, sports camps, memberships to gyms, membership to access the gym and swimming pool at the Michigan Tech Student Development Complex, driver’s education, etc.

Water and Sewer Funding

Community Action currently has funding available to assist those with past due water and/or sewage bills. If your account is past due or if you have a shut off notice from your provider, call Community Action in Houghton at 906-482-5528. Income guidelines for this program are 200% of poverty.

In-Home Services

The following programs are available to persons in Houghton and Keweenaw Counties only. Funding for these in-home service programs is provided through UPCAP Services, Inc., and the UP Area Agency on Aging.

Home Care

Provides assistance with bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, transferring, eating and ambulation. Client must experience difficulty in performing activities of daily living. A referral from a doctor or nurses is needed. Home Care workers are trained nurses aides and/or experienced in caring for the elderly. Worker may also assist with light housekeeping as time and funding permits.

Homemaker Aide

Assists persons 60 years of age or older who are physically and/or emotionally unable to perform regular household duties. Service includes light housekeeping, laundry, and other basic chores. The service is offered as needed, depending on individual circumstances, availability of staff, and funding.

Respite Care

Trained personnel provide companionship, supervision, and assistance to mentally or physically disabled persons requiring continual supervision. Program provides relief for primary caregivers, and is offered from 4 - 8 hours weekly or as needed. A referral from a doctor or nurse is needed.

Keweenaw Handicraft Shop

HEADING TO KEWEENAW COUNTY?

STOP AND BROWSE AT THE KEWEENAW HANDICRAFT SHOP LOCATED ON US-41 IN AHMEEK, 17 MILES NORTH OF HANCOCK

The SHOP features: hand woven baskets, wood carvings, carpets, quilts, pillows, knitted and crocheted items, baby clothes, dolls, jewelry, copper specimens, decorations, and numerous other souvenir items. Local craftsmen use the SHOP as an outlet for selling their merchandise.

The Keweenaw Handicraft Shop opens seasonally beginning Memorial Day weekend and closes in early October.

Shop is open 7 Days a Week From 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

The Keweenaw Handicraft Shop is operated by the Baraga-Houghton-Keweenaw Community Action Agency
